Fine resolution mapping of population age-structures

(a) Mean predicted percentage of population under 5 years based on model-based geostatistics (MBG) and (b) map of differences between the upper and lower limits of prediction (i.e., the 95% credible intervals).
Comparison of the number of children not using and ITN by state from three different estimates namely: the MBG approach (red rectangles with Bayesian intervals), projected census estimates (black circles) and UN estimates for the whole of Nigeria.

Using geolocated household surveys data to predict the proportions of population under 5 years, the results show that southern Nigeria had lower proportions of children under 5 as compared to the northern regions. For example, Kano, Katsina and Kaduna states had some of the highest proportions of population. The gaps in estimated number of bed-nets varied within Nigeria with the largest being in Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states.
